If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace.

Next push must be sustainable energy
Sustainability
Sunday, March 15, 2009
The cancellation of two proposed new coal-burning power plants in Iowa is a ray of hope that we can indeed cope with the new reality of human-caused global warming. A major factor in the cancellations was the state of the economy and lack of capital. However, it was encouraging that Interstate Power and Light will continue constructing a wind farm in northern Iowa.

This brings up the matter of environmental capital and sends an important message to industry leaders. Capital is becoming ever more environmental capital. But the new reality includes another concept - sustainability - that Wall Street doesn't like to hear.
The recession may have reduced capital for sustainable energy development, but it has reduced capital for the most harmful forms of energy development as well. At this moment in time, the latter outweighs the former.

As the recession eases, solar, wind and geothermal development must move forward, and old polluting coal plants at the end of their use must be shuttered. It's the right investment, and the right example to show other nations.
