Religious Youth Service Rebuilds a Pre-School in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

Jaffna, Sri Lanka - After the 26-year Sri Lanka civil war ended in May 2009, much work remains to settle displaced people and help resume normal peacetime life. Religious Youth Service organized a project to help repair a pre-school building December 11-17 on the northern tip of the island as part of a national rebuilding effort.

RYS Helps Provide Clean Water for Blackwood Village in Sri Lanka

Badulla, Sri Lanka - The Blackwood Village in Beragala, Badulla did not have pipe-borne water. Religious Youth Service volunteers helped renovate the existing mini reservoir which had been abandoned in recent times, thus restoring the pipe-borne water way. RYS also supported the road repair, including the reconstruction of a bridge which was badly damaged, on the roadway that lead to the Hindu Kovil, which was also in a very dilapidated state.

Colombo, Sri Lanka – To mark the United Nation's "International Day of Peace" on September 21, 2008, the Western Province Schools of Sri Lanka organized a talent contest amongst the school children. Many of the participants were RYS alumni. The competition was held from September 12-19, 2008 in Colombo. The theme of the competition was simply "Peace."

NextGen Interns Promote Character Education in Sri Lanka

Interns Elysa Thalheimer, Tesia Bobrycki, and Audrey Martin were struck by the war-like aspects of Sri Lanka. Everywhere they went, they saw officers with rifles stopping cars and checking everything. They learned that if you are Tamil, it is especially difficult. Most Tamil students yearn for peace, but they don't know how it will come about. The idea of a peace sports festival inspired them, as did meeting their first Westerners. The interns felt the impact of war on society in a way they had never felt before.
