On the same day they came to Nepal to inaugurate UPF, Nepal’s peace process began. The 12-point Memorandum of Understanding was signed in New Delhi between the Maoists and the Seven Party Alliance. The beginning of ending the decade-long war that left as many as 15,000 Nepalese people dead was on the same day as UPF’s inauguration in Nepal: Nov. 22, 2005. We are here in memory of that event eight years ago.

Kathmandu, Nepal - The UN International Day of Peace was celebrated by UPF-Nepal sponsoring three programs held in the capital region of Kathmandu on September 21. These programs included a national martial arts tournament supported by Nepal’s National Sports Council, a student interaction and mediation co-sponsored with the Shanti Sewa Ashram, and a “Play Soccer for Peace and Reconciliation” competition that included 24 teams.

Five-day seminars on UPF's Principles of Peace are being offered in various parts of Nepal. A seminar in Kathmandu August 5-9 attracted participants from Nepal and India. An overflow audience of 350 attended the August 15-19 seminar in Biratnagar. Leaders from four faith traditions demonstrated their commitment to interreligious cooperation by jointly pouring water onto a plant at the opening of the August 25-29 seminar in Nepalgunj.

Nepalgunj, Nepal - Approximately 260 participants attended the Opening and Closing Sessions of the third Universal Principles of Peace seminar in Nepal August 25-29. Religious leaders from four faith traditions inaugurated the event by demonstrating their unity at the beginning of the five-day program through watering a plant together.
