Paramaribo, Suriname - UPF-Suriname held a conference for Ambassadors for Peace celebrating the International Day of Families on May 14. The peace principles of UPF were presented as a solution to domestic violence, followed by a question and answer period.

Women's Day Program in Suriname Addresses Domestic Violence

Paramaribo, Suriname - A program about Domestic Violence took place at at the Ons Huis in Paramaribo on March 8, International Women's Day. There were 35 participants, 30 women and 5 men The evening opened with the national anthem and prayer.

Religious Youth Service Alumni Meet Suriname's First Lady

Paramaribo, Suriname - The First Lady of Suriname, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, asked Suriname youth to build on the spirit of volunteerism embodied by Religious Youth Service and the "Generation Peace" team visiting from the US and initiate a national volunteer organization. "Our nation needs to develop the spirit of volunteerism like what we have experienced through the work of these young adults," she said.

"Fixabroko" - Repairing the Broken in Suriname through Religious Youth Service

Brokopondo, Suriname - Twenty-one Religious Youth Service participants spent August 15 to 26 clearing bush and debris from the war-torn community of Brokopondo, clearing a path to a multipurpose court which had also been abandoned since the time of the military coup in 1980, and restoring playground equipment.

Religious Youth Service Brings Youth Leaders Together in Suriname

Paramaribo, Suriname -The Paramaribo Zoo had almost became dormant until Netherlander Rain Forest expert Auke Heilkma came to its rescue. With the help of youths from various religious and cultural backgrounds from Suriname, Guyana, French Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, USA, and Jamaica, the Paramaribo Zoo has almost recovered. The zoo is home to some 200 species of animals, with a wide variety of snakes, birds, and monkeys.
